How to Make the Most of Your Engagement Session

Your engagement session is more than just a photoshoot—it's an opportunity to celebrate your engagement and this season of life you’re in. Here’s how to ensure your session feels authentic, fun, and beautiful:

1. Incorporate an Activity You Both Love

Is there something you and your partner enjoy doing together that could translate beautifully into photos? Whether it’s hiking, cooking, skating, reading books, swimming, or playing with your dog at the park, choosing an activity helps create genuine moments and relaxed, natural expressions. These candid moments make your photos feel uniquely yours. To give you a visual, some nights my husband is playing his guitar while I’m knitting or reading a book, two different activities can compliment each other as well.

2. Choose a Sentimental Location

Picking a meaningful location can bring extra depth to your session. Maybe it’s where you had your first date, the spot where you proposed, or a favorite place you both love to visit. A sentimental setting adds a personal touch to your photos while also sparking special memories during the session.

3. Coordinate Outfits Without Overmatching

Outfits set the tone for your photos, so plan ahead. Coordinate colors and styles with your partner, but avoid matching too much—it can feel forced. Instead, opt for complementary tones, textures and layers. Bring multiple options to showcase different looks, like casual and dressy styles. Don’t forget comfortable shoes if you’re walking or hiking to a location!

4. Embrace the Moment: Let Go of Worries

The best photos happen when you let your guard down. Trust your photographer’s direction and be willing to step out of your comfort zone. You might feel silly spinning around, whispering inside jokes, or dancing in the middle of a field, but that willingness to play, to feel free and be present translates into magic on camera.

5. Channel Your Inner Actor/Actress

Engagement sessions are the perfect time to step into a story. Imagine you’re the main characters in your favourite romantic movie. How would you move, laugh, and look at each other? Embracing that mindset can make you feel confident and expressive.

Final Tip: Communicate with Your Photographer

Share your ideas, insecurities, and hopes for the session with your photographer. Their job is to make you feel comfortable and capture the essence of your relationship. A little collaboration goes a long way! I love to see vision boards, outfit options and hear our ideas.

Your engagement session is all about celebrating your love in a way that feels organic and fun. So, relax, enjoy the process, and get ready to create memories (and photos) you’ll treasure for a lifetime
